A Contemporary Coastal Wedding at MCASD: Inside The Engagement Party
There are some wedding venues that are simply beautiful. Then there are places that change the way people experience a wedding. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is one of those dream locations. As both a contemporary artist and a wedding photographer, I felt strangely at home photographing The Engagement Party at MCASD. Museums ask us to slow down, notice details, and experience ideas. Great weddings do exactly the same thing.
Walking through the terraces overlooking the Pacific, every space felt like its own temporary installation—created by planners, florists, designers, caterers, artists, musicians, and countless creative partners working together.
I've always believed that the best weddings are collaborative works of art, and this event was a beautiful reminder of why.
What is The Engagement Party?
Most wedding showcases ask couples to walk from booth to booth.
The Engagement Party turns that idea inside out.
Instead of displaying individual vendors, creative teams transform the museum into a series of fully realized wedding environments. Each planner leads a collaborative team of florists, rental companies, caterers, musicians, artists, and designers to create immersive spaces that couples can actually experience. Rather than imagining what a wedding could look like, you get to step inside one. That collaborative spirit was one of my favorite parts of the day besides the new friends I met.
Why Couples Love Getting Married at MCASD
Ocean Views
Nearly every terrace opens toward the Pacific.
As the light changes throughout the afternoon, the museum transforms from bright coastal sunshine into warm golden hour and eventually an elegant evening reception. Hello beautiful La Jolla light.
Contemporary Architecture
One of my favorite things to photograph is where architecture and people meet.
MCASD's clean lines, sculptural walls, and open spaces become part of the photographs rather than simply serving as a backdrop. Heck yes to the modern.
Art Everywhere
Unlike a traditional ballroom, guests spend the evening surrounded by contemporary artwork.
The museum itself becomes part of the wedding experience.
Indoor + Outdoor Flexibility
Couples can move naturally between galleries, terraces, cocktails, dinner, dancing, and sunset portraits without ever losing the feeling of being connected to the ocean. This summer we have the Giants exhibition which is amazing.
Let’s talk about the different spaces and creative designs.

Why I Loved Photographing It
Photography has introduced me to planners, artists, florists, chefs, architects, designers, musicians, and couples from all over the world.
Events like this remind me why I love this industry so much.
Every person brings a different expertise, but when everything comes together, the result feels effortless.
My favorite photographs are usually made in collaboration.
I love being surrounded by art and creatives.
Planning a Wedding at MCASD?
If you're planning a wedding at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego—or simply dreaming about one—I would love to hear what you're imagining.
Whether your celebration is intimate or includes hundreds of guests, MCASD offers one of the most inspiring wedding settings in Southern California.
I'd be honored to help tell that story.

I've always loved photographing the place where architecture, design, and people meet. Museums are built to celebrate creativity, and weddings are one of the most creative collaborations we experience in our lives. Bringing those two worlds together felt completely natural.
