THE $40,900 QUESTION: Staci Pearlman FROM THE SAN DIEGO MUSEUM OF ART//DECEMBER 20, 2014

Today's guest is Staci Pearlman of Staci and Evan fame.  We are so so thrilled to share with you here newest venture.  Staci is the definition of style and fun.  Her new venture Urban Botanicals is sure to be a huge success.  Here's a little bit about one inspiring lady.xoxo Suzanne

What inspired you to open a floral business?

We met all the way back in high school, but the idea of urban botanicals came upon us way later in our friendship. We had always wanted to start a business together, and had brainstormed a lot of fun ideas. We had a mutual love for floral design, and after we realized we could turn our bloom obsession into a business, we just went for it!

What are some floral combinations that you just love?

We LOVE anemones, garden roses, kale, ranunculus, peonies, and dahlias. The more unique, the better!

What do you think will be the most thrilling aspect of having a floral business?

So far, the most thrilling part of having a floral business has been seeing photos from events and the homes of our clients. Recently, we’ve done some pretty big events, and seeing our work come to fruition has been super rewarding.

A piece of advice for brides to be?

Relax, and trust the people you’re working with. Vendors are there to help make your day special, so relax, and enjoy the moment – it only happens once! And, if something goes wrong (and it probably will), no one will notice but you – trust us! A dream event?

Living in LA, we’re within arm’s reach of some pretty inspiring designers. It would be so cool to collaborate with a brand we love and look up to someday.

What makes you so wonderful?

We’re real. We’ve truly become friends with each and every one of our clients after working with them. We love that they feel they can trust us, and be real with their needs and wants.

What is another job besides florals that you would like to do?

Well, urban botanicals is actually not our only job! We both have full-time careers in the fashion industry – Staci as a copywriter, and Niki as a merchandise planner.

What do you do to unwind and recharge?

We live down the street from each other, and coincidentally, our significant others are close friends too, so we hang out a lot as a group. We love trying new restaurants in Santa Monica and Venice, wine nights, working out, and having long brunches with friends. Three things you can't live without?

Flowers (a given), our significant others, and family. If you had $40,900 to spend on one trip, where would you go and what would you do?

EASY! We’d rent a massive house on the beach in Tulum and invite our closest friends and family to spend a few weeks there with us. And, we’d go all out on the extras – daily massages, home-cooked meals, jet skis, snorkeling sesh’s, and all-you-can-eat guac!! Okay, now we need a vacay!

Singing Along With: December Jingles Playlist

While the weather outside here in San Diego may not be so frightful, nothing gets us more spirited for the holidays like a good ol' playlist. Whether we're snuggling up to our loved ones or trying to decorate our festive palm trees, good music is always a must have for the happy holiday season.

4 Things... Happy Weekend!

Hope you are all having a relaxing Sunday! Just wanted to pop in and share some fun updates about what I've been up to. This weekend Jen and I are going on a road trip to Arizona. We decided it was time for an art date with Billy Joel, the Phoenix Art Museum, and Sedona. We will be posting a few pics along the way on Instagram. #azstateofmind I'll definitely be taking a few shots on the road and share them here soon. For now, these are four things I've been loving lately...

Reading: The Firestarter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte. Recommended to me by the lovely Courtney Bright of Brightly Designed. This book helps you design your life in a way that is most meaningful for you.

Watching: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the Old Globe Theater. Mike and I love the flexibility of season passes. I had the opportunity to catch this play last week with Mike, Jen, and my mom. If you get a chance head on over and have a laugh.

Listening: "Same Love" by Macklemore. I know I'm about a year late, but I just heard this song for the first time yesterday.

Dreaming: Of our destination wedding in Orcas Island in July. So excited for the chance to shoot and explore the pacific northwest. I made a Pinterest board for inspiration, check it out here Maybe it will inspire a trip of your own.

Happy Weekend!

xoxo, Suzanne

Film. Nichol

Lately, I've fallen in love with The Artist's Way. As cliche as it sounds that book has changed me. I'm closer to my art and feel boundless when I think about it. The Artist Way has two basic concepts. One is to journal the other is to go on art dates. I recently had an art date with Nichol. We played at the beach. I photographed her and she photographed the world around us. The first two images are mine and the rest are Nichols. All shot on Ilford Fp4 on a Pentax K1000 and developed at Richards Photo Lab.Thanks for collaborating with me Nichol! I can't wait for what's to come.

Suzanne

International Museum Day

Happy International Museum Day!To celebrate, I would love to share some of my all time favorite museums with you. Keep reading to see what these great places are up to lately!

Museum of Contemporary Art, Syndey

MCA in Sydney, Australia has a fascinating piece called Sleepers Awake happening this month...

"For nine nights this luminous sculpture will rise over Bungarribee, signalling the transformation of a vacant site in the Blacktown area of the Western Sydney Parklands to a new 200 ha park and community hub.Sleepers Awake is accompanied each night by a community performance festival running 5.30 to 7.30pm and featuring a wide range of acts in music, dance, performance and film selected from all over Western Sydney and the metropolitan Sydney basin."

Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), San Francisco

SFMOMA is currently closed for construction, but is hosting exhibitions and events all around San Francisco. Their current exhibition is at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, but check their website for all kinds of fun events!

"Disrupting expected images of South Africa, the 25 contemporary artists and collectives featured in Public Intimacy eloquently explore the poetics and politics of the everyday. This collaboration with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents pictures from SFMOMA’s collection of South African photography alongside works in a broad range of media, including video, painting, sculpture, performance, and publications — most made in the last five years, and many on view for the first time on the West Coast. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of democracy in South Africa, Public Intimacy reveals the nuances of human interaction in a country still undergoing significant change, vividly showing public life there in a more complex light."

Public Intimacy

Guggenheim, New York

The Guggenheim has several exhibitions on view and multiple ways to get involved in art. And, they are offering $5 off admission today for International Museum Day. Enjoy!

One of the current exhibits is "Italian Futurism, 1909–1944: Reconstructing the Universe examines the historical sweep of the movement from its inception with F. T. Marinetti's founding manifesto in 1909 through its demise at the end of World War II. The exhibition features more than 360 works executed between 1909 and 1944, encompassing not only painting and sculpture, but also advertising, architecture, ceramics, design, fashion, film, free-form poetry, music, performance, photography, publications, and theater."

The Cream Event by The Vetted Table

Mike and I made our way up to LA this weekend to check out all the cool kids at the Cream Event. We had been to Hitched a couple of years ago in Palm Springs so we knew it would be a good time. The Vibiana is gorgeous.  I would love to photograph a wedding there.Check out this beautiful table by The Vetted Table.  We are huge fans of  their yummy cuisine.  The Hostess Haven created this amazing table scape.  I would have been perfectly happy to sit at it all night and have a glass of wine and devour all the oysters.  I'm not sure what is better having a husband who cooks or having a wife who creates beautiful evenings.  Either way cheers to these two, man I have some talented friends.

Darlin' I'll climb any mountain

So a few days ago I was chatting with the ever so handsome Ed, about the road to Hana and their fun times in Maui.  The conversation turned to back pain and I mentioned my inability to scale mountains. Geez I have been wanting to post about curing my sciatica forever. I prefer to suffer in silence and then post the cure once I've found it. It's been a long 18 months or so since I had to give up Bootcamp and start my crazy journey to get better.  So here are some things that helped me along the way in case any of you have photographers shoulder or editors back.

I'm halfway home and bending at the knees to pick things up and leaning on Mike and I'll be able to report super success soon.

But just in case this makes anyone's journey shorter I thought i'd share now.  I spoke with a photographer a year or so ago that quit the industry due to back pain and I felt so sad. I couldn't imagine not being a part of this crazy industry.  She inspired me to not give up. Other things that have made me not want to give up are:  My cousin Amber's sneakers that are perpetually moving in front of me with ease, a mountain on Stromboli, and mikes dedication to getting off the couch.

Here was my arsenal start to finish. General chiropractor Life Within  Love this place.  I have been going for a decade.  Unfortunately it didn't help at all with sciatica. Specialty chiropractor The League Chiropractic  They specialize in only seeing a patient a few times.  This is great and the first two sessions were the most beneficial.  They made a HUGE difference but after that we couldn't progress any further. 2 Physical therapist  Honestly I went for 10 sessions but didn't see a benefit although I'm sure many would.  I think my muscles were too inflamed for it to work. Massage therapist david at Balance Point Massage - great therapist.  He has helped me with a shoulder injury and a psoas injury and cured my TMJ.  Great great place.  Please go and heal photographers shoulder. Although for sciatica again we hit a road block. CorePower Yoga  ommmm...  awesome sense of community.  It is an inspiring place where they have so many classes in sd there is no excuse not to go.  I could still do 70% of the postures but forward fold is definitely the most dangerous and I did pigeon on my back.  I'm really grateful to the dozens of classes I've taken here.  It really helped me to cope with the pain.

And most recently and these two are amazing. The Dailey Method (thanks regan)  Seriously awesome workout that has an orthopedic background.  I really resisted going because I was afraid of injuring myself more.  I wish I went right away.  It is so cool to be able to work out without hurting yourself. Massagetherapysandiego.net Deanne 858-380-7125 (thanks jen morisson)  Once I went here I felt comfortable sharing my plan to success.  Deanne is a sciatic massage specialist.  80% of her clients have the same issue as me.  I am getting better in leaps and bounds.  On fast forward.  This is making a huge difference for me.  Start here.  If you have sciatica go get better.

I hope that soon I am climbing mountains again and that you are too.

Laura and Nick the Reveal

To reveal or not to reveal.  This is a question my brides and grooms think about a lot.  Is it special?  Is it emotional?  Is it so fun to hang out together before the ceremony.  Some of our couples think that it is.  I love the first look whether it is walking down the aisle of a quiet moment between the two of you.  Either way his heart will surely miss a beat.Happy Monday!

Lake capture: engagement tip

Hi everyone,This weekend we are all about lakes.

I am loving this cold weather.  Although most of the time San Diego is 70 and sunny, sometimes it's nice to have a cold weather feel.  So grab your cutest sweaters and head on over to Julian.  You can usually count on the weather being cold enough to sport some winter fashion.

Consider having your engagement be a little bit of an adventure.

Best, Becky
